On 19 March 2019, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first president of Kazakhstan, announced in a televised address that he would step down from the presidency after almost three decades in power. Having led the republic since before independence in 1991, his decision was regarded as the end of an era in Kazakhstan's modern history.
