Westchester County, New York, played a unique role in the American Revolutionary War. From late 1776 to the end of the War in 1783, much of Westchester was a notorious no-man's land, known as the Neutral Ground, between the British Army and its auxiliaries on one side and the American Patriot forces on the other. Only the northernmost part of the county remained under more stable, though still contested, American control.
