Since the 2025 reforms to local government, the only cities in Vietnam are first-level administrative divisions, equivalent to a province and officially known as cities subject to central administration. City status requires a resolution of the National Assembly of Vietnam. As with provinces, they are divided into urban wards, rural communes, and, where appropriate, island special zones.
