Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, better known as Major Hafiz, is a Bangladeshi politician, former footballer and military officer who has been serving as the acting president of Bangladesh since 24 July 2026, following the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin, in his constitutional capacity as Speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad, a post he has held since March 2026. Under Article 54 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, the Speaker assumes the powers of the presidency when the office falls vacant, and a new president must be elected by Parliament within 90 days under Article 123(1). He was the national standing committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and a retired Bangladesh Army major, and a six-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Bhola-3 constituency. He also served as the minister of Commerce in the Third Khaleda ministry and later served as the minister of Liberation War Affairs in the Tarique ministry. He fought in the Bangladesh War of Independence and was awarded Bir Bikrom, the country's third highest gallantry award. He is also a retired footballer and one of the few from East Pakistan to have represented the Pakistan national football team. In recognition of his contribution to the sport, he was awarded the FIFA Order of Merit, the highest honour awarded by FIFA, in 2004.
