Dardistan (داردستان) refers to the linguistic area where Dardic languages are spoken. The region also includes many non-Dardic peoples and languages. The term's legitimacy has been questioned. The term was coined by 19th-century orientalist Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner; however, the first use of the term is disputed. Historically, the term traces back to Herodotus's "Dadikai", likely corresponding to the Puranic "Daradas", a label for fierce frontier people rather than a specific group or geography. The term serves as a convenient shorthand for the unexplored Karakoram region.
