Arawak is an exonym used for various groups of Indigenous peoples in northern South America and the Caribbean. The term "Arawak" has been applied at different times to several Indigenous groups, including the Lokono of South America and the Taíno, who lived in the Greater Antilles and northern Lesser Antilles. These groups spoke related Arawakan languages, part of one of the most widespread Indigenous language families in the Americas. Historically, none of the peoples described by the term referred to themselves as "Arawak". The term became widely used through the work of 19th-century linguists.
