Ahenzae, also written Ohenzae and Ehenzai, was the twentieth Oba ('king') of the Kingdom of Benin. Historian Jacob Egharevba dates his accession to about 1641 and the end of his reign to around 1661, giving him a reign of approximately twenty years. Egharevba describes Ahenzae as a great-grandson of Oba Orhogbua who was sixteen when he succeeded the childless Oba Ohuan. Anthropologist Percy Amaury Talbot proposed an earlier chronology, placing Ehenzai's reign between approximately 1630 and 1650; the difference reflects uncertainty over the order and dating of seventeenth-century Benin rulers. Benin historical traditions describe senior courtiers as exercising increased influence during Ahenzae's reign because of the monarch's youth and their control over access to him. These accounts associate the period with reduced direct royal authority and the dispersal of treasures accumulated by previous Obas. One tradition states that Ahenzae lost the royal coral beads while playing dice with Osuan, a priest connected with the Oba's ritual establishment. Because coral regalia held religious and political significance among the Edo people, scholars have used the account to illustrate the reduced authority attributed to the monarchy during this period. Art-historical scholarship has also associated his reign with the end of production of the palace plaques now classified among the Benin Bronzes, although neither the date nor the reasons for this change have been established conclusively.
