It is tied with the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake as the country's strongest earthquake in modern history since seismological observations started in Korea in 1978, and the most destructive ever recorded with "an estimated 300 billion won in damage.". It also recorded a VII intensity on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale, making it the second largest earthquake in recorded history in Korea.
