1688 Invasion of England

Wikipedia Overview

The 1688 invasion of England by William III of Orange was a large-scale military operation mounted by the Dutch Republic to depose King James II and secure England as an ally in the coming Nine Years' War. Although framed as a defence of English liberties, the expedition was planned primarily to prevent an Anglo-French alignment and to avoid a repeat of the crisis of 1672. With an invitation from seven English politicians providing political cover, William assembled one of the largest fleets in European history and landed an experienced, well-equipped army at Torbay in November 1688. The campaign was marked more by political collapse and desertion within James's ranks than by pitched battles. James's retreat from Salisbury and eventual flight to France enabled William to occupy London without much resistance, triggering the constitutional settlement known as the Glorious Revolution and bringing England decisively into the war against Louis XIV.
